recorded outbreak of dengue fever in India was in 1812,
serological surveys were first carried out in 1954,
and the latter indicated that DEN-1 and DEN-2 were widespread(14).
In 1960, DEN-4 was isolated in Vellore, in the South,
without any association with haemorrhagic diathesis(15).
The types of dengue virus isolated from patients in
the Vellore area between 1956 and 1968 are depicted
in Table 4.
